An Afternoon Off

One day a week David's parents look after Cal, spoiling him rotten, and I get to have a day to myself. Usually I have to work all day, struggling to catch up with admin and copy jobs, but today I finished everything in the morning and had the afternoon to myself. I spent the first two hours writing - this morning I saw the most adorable full-stop sized spider on the wall and thought he'd make a nice character. I was impressed that it turned into a story so quickly after so many months off the writing wagon. I sent it to Anorak magazine and it'll be published next February. I can't wait to see who'll illustrate it. It's better than Christmas seeing talented designers and illustrators bring your words to life in pictures. Nothing fills me up more.

And then I took myself out for a sneaky drink and a piece of apple tart to celebrate. It's Bok Beer season and every bar worth a thing has the deliciously dark and sweet bok beer on tap. There's a new bar called Spek (Bacon in Dutch) on the Jan Evertstraat that Cal and I visit after we see the pigs down the road at the kinder farm, and this time I was able to enjoy it sans baby. I spent an hour reading my book - The Tender Bar/ J.R. Moehringer - and just soaked up the quiet for a bit. And as if the afternoon couldn't have gotten better, I then came across a new 2nd hand kids op-shop and scored a whole swag of great stuff including a baby back-pack which I'm looking forward to taking to Sri Lanka with us next week.
